The first time I heard Labzy Lawal rhyme was at the University of Lagos freestyle competition back in 2007. Always ready to pounce on a beat, the young rapper showed a lot of promise even though he was eliminated in the second round.
Years have gone by and Labzy has grown in vocal maturity, delivery and style. While some of his peers are still stuck in the ‘freestyle zone’ Labzy has been taking his time connecting the dots, trying to see what it takes to drop a tight rap song with appeal.
He just might have pulled it off with ‘Takarawa‘. Featuring pop singer Orezi, the pop-themed song is quite pacy but Labzy balances well on it with his quick delivery. It’s a danceable, bumpy song. Nice.
