Onyeka Onwenu – Iyogogo
This one remains evergreen in the hearts of so many who watched NTA 5 in the early 90s. NTA would play this song at the beginning and end of daily transmission, those days when transmission began at 4pm and ended at 12am. Nostalgic, huh?
Released in 1992, the four minutes, thirty-nine seconds song begins with this soft stridency of instruments that holds your train of thought, then she begins with, ‘Iyele Iyele, Iyele, Iyele, Iyele, Iyele, Iyele, … I have been missing you, missing you, why don’t you stay?’ Watch below…
Onyeka Onwenu – Ekwe
Ekwe is not very popular, perhaps because it was recorded in Igbo. But, it is a very lovely song and I am sure my Igbo friends will agree with me. This song stems from an old Igbo folklore from so many years back. It is about a man called Ekwe who loves his girlfriend so much that he follows her about. The music was released in Nigeria; at a time women would tell guys such words like ‘eji m gi ugwo’, which simply means ‘Leave me alone, I don’t owe you anything’. Very nice song! Watch below…
