Nigerian music artistes Adekunle Gold and Simi have emerged as winners of the NET Honours Class of 2022 ‘Most Popular Couple’. The duo beat Lateef & Bimpe Adedimeji, Toyin Lawani & Segun Adebayo, Akah & Claire Nnani, Banky W & Adesua Etomi, who were in the same category.
NET Honours recognises and celebrate Nigerians’ favourite celebrities and public figures who have contributed to shaping the most exciting pop culture topics and events in the year under review.
Simi gained prominence in 2014 after releasing the fan’s favourite “Tiff” while her heart rob Adekunle Gold, popularly called AG Baby, gained popularity after releasing a hit single “Sade” in 2015.
The power couple has, however, been in a relationship before they became stars. Simi told Netng in a recent interview, “when we started dating, we were not co-stars, so growing together helped. There is also a lot of understanding between us. We support each other, respect each other as individuals, and do whatever we can to help each other without intruding. We are always on the same page.”
Simi did the mixing and mastering for AG Baby’s debut album Gold, and they collaborated on the track “Take Me Back” (off Simi’s 2017 album Simisola). They have since collaborated on other sensational songs including “No Forget”, “Promise”, “By You”, “Bite The Dust”, and “Balance”.
The love birds, who got married in January 2019 and welcomed their first child, Adejare in May 2020, aside from making music together, often tease each other on social media making many fans scream “God when.”
Following Simi and Adekunle Gold’s constant display of their fairy tale romance and the conversations it had sparked in the Nigerian Entertainment space, the duo had also been on NET Honours 2021 Most Popular Couple nominee list.
NET Honours remains one of the world’s most prestigious verified audience data-based awards. The award “provides useful data on popular culture trends and the interests of urban youth in Africa.
“The platform is a valuable source of insights for brands, organisations and governments that are trying to understand young Africans and their digital media consumption habits,” says Femi Falodun, the CEO of Info Digital Africa (ID Africa), owners of Netng, Neusroom, 234Star, and Orin.
