Shortly after its flourished entry into Nigeria with the announcement made on its Twitter page, Netflix has announced that it will be creating its first Nigerian Original series. Not a lot has been revealed about it, but here is what we do know about it.
The project, a sci-fi drama series created by Akin Omotoso, is set to be in modern-day Lagos. It tells the story of a goddess who is reincarnated as a human being to avenge her sister’s death. But first, she must learn how to harness her powers for good.
The series will star actors Kate Henshaw, Joke Silva, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), Ireti Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, Kehinde Bankole, Ade Laoye and Nonso Bassey.
The series is set to be directed by C.J. Obasi and Daniel Oriahi. It will be produced by Rififi Pictures and co-produced by Kemi Lala Akindoju. As of yet, it remains untitled. We trust that a fitting name will be given to what, with its seasoned cast and prolific team, already promises to be an amazing series.
This is a huge milestone for not just Nigeria but Africa as well. This is coming off the release of Netflix’s first Africa Original titled ‘Queen Sono’ created by South African comedian and actor Kagiso Lediga. The Queen Sono series is a thriller spy drama starring Pearl Thusi as the main character, a female spy working for the Special Operations Group (SOG) fighting crime while also trying to demystify aspects of her complicated personal life.
The series premiered on Netflix on February 28, 2020. It is set in present day South Africa and attempts to highlight the country’s present-day politics, growing femicide crisis and gender-based violence. It promises to be just the start as the streaming network is excited to tell more stories of Africa.
