Bovi Ugboma, one of Africa’s most accomplished comedians and originator of the stand-up show ‘Man on Fire’ and web series ‘Back To School’, commented that he believes there is a difference between skits and comedy.
He shared this with popular media personality Bolanle Olukanni during a fireside chat at the eighth edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (#NECLive8). The comedian made his feelings known during an exciting session at #NECLive8 – the biggest gathering of Nigerian entertainment practitioners – which was held on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
He said, “The skit culture is actually different from comedy. For some people, they possess the ability to do skits, other can do stand-up comedy, while some can do comedy in movies. So, I think this difference has helped to create a new industry. In the sense that there are people who are so witty and can make you laugh in less than thirty seconds by what they dramatise through their skits. So, it’s a win-win situation for both the executioners and the consumers of these products.”
Bovi, who has stayed relevant since he began his career in 2007 on the set of ‘Extended Family’, also talked about how technology has changed the comedy industry.
“Now everyone has a TV station, your Instagram channel is your TV station; your TikTok or YouTube Channel is your TV station,” said Bovi. “So, it’s a perfect opportunity for people to showcase their talent. And if it’s good, the world would ultimately buy. I usually tell them that you don’t even have to beg people to post your stuff. If it’s good, people will share because people like to share joy. They like to share laughter and all.”
Other speakers were founder, Future Africa, Iyin Aboyeji; Nollywood superstar, Dakore Egbuson-Akande; entrepreneur and founder, Temple Management Company, Idris Olorunnimbe; Big Cabal CEO, Tomiwa Aladekomo; and 2019 Big Brother Naija winner and businesswoman, Mercy Eke. The conference was hosted by media personality and producer, Bolanle Olukanni.
