Jesuyemi John Oluwatobi started as a choir boy in CAC, Itire, Lagos. He’s a 22-year-old who describes himself as easy-going, loving and smart. Oluwatobi is a recipient of the MTN Foundation scholarship for MUSON scholars.
The violinist admits to once trekking twice on Lekki-Ikoyi bridge to attend rehearsals at a studio. He expresses the impact of the scholarship on his life and ability to learn music, he says, “our kind of music is expensive even without a scholarship. If not for MTNF, I would have left my house at 5am to start trekking to school for 8 am classes. I’m really grateful for the monthly subsidies and standard books as well.”
Oluwatobi enjoys Fireboy’s music and hopes to perform with him soon, saying “I feel like his music still needs some violin spices.”
The violinist was one of the 30 graduating students from the Musical Society of Nigeria on Monday, August 24, 20. Every year, the MTN Foundation sponsors 30 young Nigerian musicians to study music at the prestigious MUSON School of Music, and in the past 13 years, 330 students have been awarded this scholarship.
