American make-up company, CoverGirl was founded in 1961 and for the first time in its history it has a male person, James Charles as its representative.
The self-taught 17-year-old make-up artist from New York has become an Instagram and Youtube sensation for his skills at teaching both men and women how to apply make-up.

‘All CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful. James Charles is no exception,’ the company said in a statement.
‘One year ago, he boldly chose to launch his Instagram to the world, using transformative, dynamic makeup looks to showcase the many facets of his personality, serving as an inspiration to anyone who might have been afraid to do the same,’ the company said.

Charles says that his first job was in hairstyling and it all changed when a friend asked him to do her make-up for a school dance. ‘it turned out awesome and she posted a picture,’ he told Cosmopolitan.
Charles began experimenting make-up on himself over a year ago and now he has more than 400,000 followers on Instagram and 75,000 people subscribed to his Youtube account.

The new cover … boy, Charles will follow in the footsteps of models such as Christie Brinkley, Cybill Shepherd and the brand’s first representative in 1963, Jennifer O’Neill.

‘I really hope that as the first male CoverGirl that I am able to inspire others and give other people confidence to try out makeup! Hey, if a random 17-year-old guy can do it, you DEFINITELY can too!’ James said.
