The Nigeria police have announced the arrest of more than 40 men over the weekend for what they described as performing homosexual acts.
Police were said to have raided a Lagos hotel where the arrest was reportedly carried out on Saturday afternoon, with a plan to take the case to court later.
Gay marriages are punishable by up to 14 years in jail in Nigeria, while homosexual acts and displays of same-sex affection are also prohibited by law.
According to Gay Rights activist, Bisi Alimi, the event where people were arrested was to raise awareness about HIV testing in the gay community in Lagos.
Since Nigeria passed a law criminalising same sex marriage and gay organisations, law enforcement agents have cracked down on people suspected of homosexuality, leading to homosexual people going into hiding.
