Citing security concerns as the major challenge to the planned February 6 protest, 2face Idibia pulled out, only two days before the date.
While a good number of Nigerians understand his reasoning and still applaud his bravery for doing something that has never been done by any entertainer of our time – besides Fela who was an activist, many believe he was a coward for backing down, as he knew from the start what he was getting into.
‘Don’t start what u cant finish ok who send am to protest? U feel protesting na childs play? He shd think well before coming out to say things like this ok. Those that had liver have been protesting for years Gani, Fela etc all u 2face lovers u better realise this is reality and stop all these nonsense that guy no get liver period’ one man wrote angrily.
‘No mind am shebi He collect prado for akpabio hand but now nothing dey come he’s now crying pussy ass nigga. I think people should go ahead with the march without this fraudulent coward.’
‘You are a pussy, you gat no balls.you should be able to stand for what you believe in instead being in a birch about it @official2baba.that is what it,takes to be a freedom fighter like Fela no matter what’
‘He is ambitious but not courageous enough… For me since it’s a peaceful protest… Y back down.. Since celebrities are going to be involved. Police can’t do shit… It’s going to be international news’ another noted.
Many saw no justification whatsoever for the cancellation
‘Then why start the crusade in the first place? You all should leave God outta this! God did not save South Africa from Apartheid! Real men fought and died for their rights! If we ain’t ready to do same, then let’s face the music!’
‘The Americans fought n re still fighting n will still fight irrespective of the consequences that might av surrounded the situation! Lives are threatened, wasted n condemned, but they still didn’t stop fighting for their fundamental human right. But it’s so different with us Nigerians, we get scared, we get intimidated, at some state we doubt our ability for better life n give up easily. It was clearly casted on NTA news tonight that the Federal government n forces are in support of the right to fight for our fundamental human right buh den we let the selfish power mongers av their way by a threat. If we would be dying den it should be for something that’s worth it not of hunger or sickness buh den we’re scared it’s not worth it. #issokay. We av to do wah we have to do buh I’m so pained it all has to end like this’ another wrote passionately.
Some felt he had done nothing but damage his credibility and would no longer be taken seriously
‘No need to sugar coat it…he messed up by going back on his word. He was just afraid and not committed to the cause. If Martin Luther King went ahead with his protests despite him and his followers being beaten and killed. He eventually paid the ultimate price to get America where it is today. Protest ain’t for kids; @official2baba has damaged his credibility with this and he won’t be taken seriously going forward. Let the real men stand up.’
‘U are damnnnn, right. He can’t be taken seriously anymore in life..’ someone chimed in.
‘my mentor you don fall my hands , after I spent money organizing people for this protest from Ghana, this is what I get? Baba you no try, but next time if you’re not ready don’t start what you can’t finish, we all got your but you disappointed us all in diaspora.’
Beat FM OAP, Osi was in agreement and took to twitter to share his disappointment
‘So you call for a protest. Then you cancel it. Ok’ he started.
One follower drew his attention to the fact that it could have led to loss of lives and his sarcastic replay was:
‘He didn’t knw this before abi. He just found out. Very good.’
‘If you knew your protest wasn’t going as planned why not reach out to the NLC and figure out ways to get them on board,’ he wanted to know.
He added that the government had declared that every citizen had a right to a peaceful protest, using the Bring Back Our Girls campaign as an example.
‘BBOG have had more than 5 protests since this new Govt took over. I remember one of those protests that ended at Asorock. BBOG protests every now and then. No one is threatening anyone.
BBOG protested so much the Govt offered to take them on a trip to see what has bn done as regards the missing girls’
‘Police assured security. Presidency said it was well within our rights to protest. So something isn’t adding up,’ he speculated.
Do you agree? Was calling off the protest indeed a cowardly act?
