On Monday, October 21, 2013, Lupita Nyong’O was at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards where she received the ‘New Hollywood Award’ for her outstanding performance in the movie ’12 years a slave’.
Receiving the award from Angela Basett, the 30-year-old Kenyan star thanked everyone who made this dream come through ‘As you can tell, I am terribly overwhelmed, but I also feel extremely blessed by all this. And to my family especially my mummy who is here with me today, words cannot express how grateful I am for always believing in me’ Lupita said emotionally. She also thanked her director, Steve McQueen for giving her the opportunity to express herself through the film.
Some other winners included Julia Roberts who won the ‘Support Actress Award’ in the movie August: Osage County; Sandra Bullock who won the year’s ‘Actress Award for Gravity’ ; and Steve McQueen who was honoured with Hollywood Breakout Director Award.
The event which held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, California saw a lot of celebrities in attendance, including the likes of Kanye West, Jennifer Garner,Matthew McConaughey, Chris Martin, Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Jared Leto, Octavia Spencer, Bruce WillisSandra Bullock, Jake Gyllenhaal, Harrison FordRobert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, Sean Penn to mention a few.
