The Lagos State Government has praised the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti after he was honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African artist to receive the award. The honour was presented on January 31, 2026 at the Grammy Special Merit Awards held in Los Angeles, USA.

The award was accepted on Fela’s behalf by his children Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti.

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture described the recognition as a proud moment for Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa. Commissioner Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka said the honour shows Lagos’ important role as a centre for culture and creativity in Africa.

She explained that the award celebrates not just Fela’s musical talent, but also his courage and strong voice. According to her, Fela’s music boldly spoke against military rule, corruption, injustice, and oppression, while giving Africa a powerful voice on the global stage.
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was more than a musician. He used his songs to speak the truth and challenge authority. His fearless style and activism inspired many artists in Africa and beyond.
The Kuti family said the Grammy award is very meaningful because it connects different generations and shows the growing global respect for African music and culture. Today, Fela’s legacy lives on through his music, the artists he inspired, and the worldwide influence of Afrobeat.
