The Young RMD
The veteran actor was born in Aldja, Udu LGA, Delta State on July 6, 1961. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Benin, acquired another degree in Law from the University of Lagos in 2004 and was called to bar in 2005. He attended Midwest College, Warri and started his acting career by performing in his high school’s drama club. He featured in a late 80s television soap opera called Ripples after he graduated from University of Benin in 1983. Before then, he had a stint with Concord Newspapers and Metro Magazine as a reporter.
Nollywood’s Heartthrob
Appearing in the 90s TV series Checkmate as Segun Kadiri where the riveting chemistry with Ann Haatrope, who happened to be his rival, RMD cemented his status as one-half of one of Nigeria’s hottest TV couples. He acted more playboy roles in movies like Violated with Ego Boyo, Keeping Faith: Is That Love? with Genevieve Nnaji and many more, that made him a favourite of many women.
Great Fashion Game
Richard Mofe Damijo has been called the ‘Denzel Washington of Nigeria’. He always looks good and has a fashion sense that set standards for younger men. In 2018, he made his runway debut at Arise Fashion Week closing for TARYOR GABRIEL, and all we can say is there was nothing amateur about his walk. He works hard to stay abreast of fashion trends and his Instagram page is filled with stylish pictures of him. When he made the decision to lose weight in 2017 because he felt he was overweight, a lot of his fans were initially worried about him. But RMD assured people that he was at his physical best and he had never felt better.
Sense of Humour
From interacting with fellow actors to his fans on social media, he is the epitome of elegant hilarity. Richard Mofe Damijo also hops on trends like ‘ social media challenge’ and being a Marlian. For the ‘social media challenge’ where you have to post a picture mix to represent you on every social media platform, he jokingly includes a picture for Tinder, which is a dating app, even though he’s married.
Family Man
Ladies still love him because he shows how good love can be. Born into a family of 18, he had acknowledged love, support, understanding, and honesty as the main conditions for happy family life. After the death of his first wife, Nigerian journalist/publisher May Ellen-Ezekiel in 1996, RMD married TV personality Jumobi Adegbesan in 2000. He celebrated his 19th wedding anniversary to his wife on December 29 2019, posting pictures of them with sweet messages appreciate her for being the reason he smiles. He has five children and enjoys showing off his family and his wife every chance he gets.
Jack of All Trades
Who doesn’t love a man who can multitask efficiently? From working briefly as a reporter to being a practising lawyer, Richard Mofe Damijo has done it all. In his 30s, he published and sold Nigeria’s first all-gloss magazine for men titled Mister. He founded RMD Productions (an entertainment company), White Water LTD (a PR consultancy firm) and RMD Foundation (a mentorship foundation). RMD has also had a political career, joining the Delta State government as Commissioner for Culture and Tourism for seven years, which he had to take a break from acting for.
Prolific Actor
RMD has made over 100 appearances in movies. He wrote and produced his first film, Out of Bounds with Bimbo Akintola. Consistent stellar performances have earned him awards like Overall Best Actor in a Leading Role at Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2018 and Best Actor in a Leading Role at Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2005. He transitioned into more fatherly roles like his comeback for The Wedding Party where he plays Chief Felix Onwuka, the father of the groom and in Mr X Family Show.
He is set to feature in Netflix’s First Original Nigerian series and also Namaste Wahala, the first movie collaboration between Nollywood and Bollywood.
