For the past few weekends, Seyi Shay and Yemi Alade have been busy discovering the next set of music stars in the country. The two superstars are judges on Nigerian Idol and The Voice Nigeria – two of the biggest music competitions in the country currently.
The shows have dominated conversations on social media since their debut in March, and a good chunk of these conversations have centered around the judges and coaches on the shows. Seyi Shay, in particular, has been the subject of many tweets for her no-holds-barred method of dishing feedback to the contestants.
Fans have continued to draw comparisons between the shows as they run concurrently. It’s Wizkid vs Davido, or Ronaldo vs Messi all over again! But this past week, Seyi Shay and Yemi Alade demonstrated that two great things can exist side by side when they came together for a brand new song titled “Pempe”. From the official cover art of “Pempe” which features signages of both Nigerian Idol and The Voice, it was clear the stars wanted to pass this message to the fans.
The song was also an avenue to put to rest the myth that women aren’t supportive of each other, especially in the music industry. One of Seyi Shay’s captions on Instagram read, “some say women don’t support women, I and my sister @yemialade came together to change that narrative.”
You can watch Seyi Shay on #NigerianIdol every Sunday at 7 PM. Yemi Alade is on #TheVoiceNigeria 8 PM on Saturdays. Both shows air on Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv.
