Rising young rapper Champz is opening up about the creative spark behind his debut EP, and according to him, the foundation of the project comes from the artists who shaped his sound long before the world heard his name.
In an exclusive interview with Glitch Africa, the 14-year-old revealed that music has always surrounded him, from family to friends. Still, his personal inspirations played a major role in defining the direction of his project, Champion’s Arrival.
“I’ve always been around music. My family does music, my dad, and even my friends. But the artists I listen to really shaped how I wanted this EP to sound,” Champz shared. He explained that J Hus, Asko, Nines, and Clavish were the biggest influences on the project, informing the rhythms, tone, and style that run through its five tracks. “These are the main inspirations for this EP,” he said.
Champz explained that he changed his stage name from Champion to Champz and created his own musical style is ‘Afrofusion and rap,’
Even with expectations that come from being Wizkid’s son, he insists he’s not in any rush or under pressure. “There’s no pressure. I’m 14, and I still have a long journey ahead. I’ve done a lot for my age already.”
Released on November 11, his EP blends Afrofusion and rap influences, The project debuted at Number 1 on the Apple Music Nigeria Albums chart within five hours and crossed one million streams in its first day.
