Yesterday, Tuesday was Valentine’s Day and knowing Twitter as we do, we all expected the word ‘Valentines’ to trend.
While we waited for crazy tweeps to bring on the drama and the hopeless romantics to show off their gifts, we also had in mind, the fact that brands always look for clever things to say with fancy ‘creatives’ and witty captions, so we kinda expected to see some of all that.
However, two brands had the most unusual conversation that had us and the whole of Twitter Nigeria immediately hooked.
It started out as one of those conversations we see all the time, where a woman goes on and on about men being nothing but dirt bags.
A certain ‘Bisola’ had taken over American Honey’s timeline to discuss details of her relationship with one man who had proclaimed undying love for her, only for her to later discover that he was married with kids.
Hi Guys. Bisola here. I’ll be taking over #AmericanHoney’s TL today to tell you that this #MenAreScum thing isn’t just bants but fact!
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Men are really SCUM.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
A man swears that not all guys are the same. Lie! They may come in diff shapes & sizes, but they all have this in common: scumness.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
After going 2years without a man, I decided to give this dating thing a shot last Nov. with this fiine guy who’d been on my case for months.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
It was all going well. Late night dinners. Cupcakes at work, cute texts, good sex & all that. I even met his friends. He was Mr. Perfect.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Even though I couldn’t place it.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Tried convincing myself that I was probably judging him based on the guys in my past. You could say I have trust issues.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
But on Friday, I found out the little voice in my head telling me he isn’t any less “scumier” than the previous guys was correct after all.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
I’d gone to ICM with a colleague after work to get a few things for the weekend when I ran into Mr. Perfect …
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
… with a heavily pregnant woman and 2 kids!
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Part of me wanted to turn back & disappear, but on 2nd thought, I walked over to say hi. My “BF” replied, “Oh hi, what’s the name again?”
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Eh?! I didn’t know what to say. I just turned and walked away.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Can you imagine? Dude hid a whole wife and two kids from me for almost 3 months and someone somewhere will tell me men are not scum?!
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
And please don’t tell me they’re his nephews. They had his rabbit ears, opolo eyes, and whatnot. Plus matching wedding rings o!
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
This life. Smh
We figure Campari’s social media manager caught on American Honey’s tweets and thought ‘What the heck? It’s Valentine’s Day anyway’.
So they quickly jumped in and joined the conversation.
@AmericanHoneyng So sorry you had to go through all that. Please don’t judge all men by this one man’s deeds. #MenAreNotScum
— Campari Nigeria (@CampariNigeria) February 14, 2017
Ehyah.
Then Campari went on a #MenAreNotScum spree, defending all the men in the world from American Honey’s Bisola, who insisted that #MenAreScum.
Well, @CampariNigeria this is my own personal experience. Happened too many times. Hard to find a good man out there.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
@AmericanHoneyNG *sigh* I get. But is the generalization that #MenAreScum reallly fair? There’re some really good men out here you know.
— Campari Nigeria (@CampariNigeria) February 14, 2017
@CampariNigeria Agreed. But “scumness” is an inherent characteristic for both the good & the bad men. It’s something like the XY Chromosome.
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
@AmericanHoneyNG Oh really? Have you actually checked out the urban dictionary for the definition of “scum”? pic.twitter.com/cF3VCxleOt
— Campari Nigeria (@CampariNigeria) February 14, 2017
The two brands then went all Shakespeare on us
@CampariNigeria Even Shakespeare in all his wisdom kinda agrees *side eye*. pic.twitter.com/NR9nVedt2C
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
We totally loved this!
Eventually, they came to a compromise, both agreeing to disagree. Typical Nigerian behaviour. LOL.
We were really hoping they’d get in a dirty tweet-fight but that didn’t happen. *sad much*
There was more to come, however, as Campari decided to gift five females – picked by American Honey, with famous vintage shirt brand, Retrocode just to show off. (Yes, we think they were showing off but hey, they made the girls happy, so what the heck!)
Then American Honey returned the favour and five men picked by Campari were gifted with #MenareScum T-Shirts. What an irony!
Hey @JasonNjoku @naijageek_ @officialdaddymo @hartng @tundeleye here’s a Val’s Gift for you Kindly DM us on how we can get it to you. pic.twitter.com/nyaWsKHg4W
— American HoneyNG (@AmericanHoneyNG) February 14, 2017
Maybe we’ll get on Campari or American Honey’s list next year as we didn’t get any gifts this year. 🙁
They sure did make an otherwise boring Valentine’s day fun though.
No Fields Found.
