MTV Shuga: Alone Together is a new season of MTV Shuga that is telling the story of how people across four countries (Nigeria, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa) are coping with coronavirus and the lockdown.
This new season dropped three days ago, and new episodes will be released every day on YouTube.
So far, we’ve seen how two different Nigerians are coping with the lockdown. Tobi is in his comfortable house but is agonizing about the cancellation of the music concert he has been planning. Lots of money has been spent on the event, but he is getting no refunds, unfortunately.
Tobi gets stressed out when he discovers what Wasiu has been up to – sharing misinformation via social media. Tobi reads the riot act to him for sharing fake news, primarily as Wasiu is known to be associated with his company.
Tobi also gets an unpleasant surprise as he finds out that his friend Leo, who is in Kenya, has been exposed to coronavirus. Leo is self-isolating at home but is also putting up a good face about the situation.
Episode three just dropped last night, and it takes us to Kenya and South Africa. Leo is super bored being by himself while self – isolating and amuses himself by sending random memes to Zamo.
When they get on a video call, Zamo asks Leo if he has considered the possibility that he might test positive for coronavirus. However, he waves it off again as being nothing to worry about.
Leo keeps acting needy and complains about not being built for isolation, but really, who is?
Zamo reminds him that he lives in a comfortable house, a good neighbourhood, and has all the food he could want. She gives him a piece of her mind, letting him know that she thinks he is selfish and insensitive.
In her rant to Leo, Zamo gives us an insight into what low-income single mothers might be experiencing at this time. Zamo has had to close her nail salon because of the lockdown in South Africa, so this means that she does not have a source of income. According to her, if the lockdown extends for much longer, she has no idea how she’ll survive or take care of her son.
Besides, schools are closed, and her son, Spoonkie can’t go out to play, so she is constantly trying to keep him entertained.
Leo apologizes for being such an idiot, and all seems to be well. But the series ends on a sad note – Spoonkie tells Zamo that he is hungry, but Zamo reminds him that he’s already had his snack, so he’ll have to wait till the next day.
Here’s our favourite line from episode three:
Zamo explains that her mom refers to the coronavirus as ‘Cornelia’, ‘because it’s like an annoying neighbour you’re trying to avoid, and the minute she gets you, you’re kinda stuck with her.’
Isn’t that the truth?
