Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel yesterday scored his first ever UEFA champions League goal since signing for Chelsea 8 years ago.
The midfielder scored the goal in the match between Chelsea and Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, grabbing the third goal after Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schurrle had given Chelsea the lead in the 3 – 1 win over the Portugal side.
The former Lyn Oslo of Norway star, who was the subject of a long-drawn controversial transfer saga between Manchester United and Chelsea, got his goal in the 56th minute.
His club, grouped alongside Sporting Lisbon, Schalke 04 and NK Maribor in Group G, has now progressed to the knock-out stage alongside Schalke 04.
Mikel Obi completed a £16 million transfer to Chelsea FC in June 2006 and has so far scored only 5 goals for Chelsea in his 8-year stint with the English club.
