As the 72nd edition of the prestigious Golden Globes got underway early this morning, the first category for which a winner was named is that of supporting actor in a film.
The award went to J. K. Simmons for his portrayal as a brutal music instructor in the movie, Whiplash, an acclaimed performance in a movie many are reportedly yet to see.
Like Simmons, Joanne Froggatt emerged an early winner as she was named the best supporting actress in a television series. The award is for her applauded role in Downton Abbey and both winnings set the tone of what was to come at the Golden Globes awards, presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Apart from being a platform of coveted prizes for Hollywood stars in diverse areas such as stage, television and film, the Golden Globes awards event is also widely regarded a key indicator in the Oscar race later to come in the year.
