Lekan Agbeleshe, popularly called Laycon has emerged as the winner of Big Brother Naija Lockdown. After 10 weeks in Big Brother’s house, Laycon beat 19 other housemates to win the N85 million grand prize this season.
On Sunday, July 19, 2020, Laycon was introduced to the world on the Big brother Naija stage. He was dressed in a ‘disco’ top, jeans and his dreads. He quickly became a topic of discussion because he didn’t look like the ‘usual’ housemate. He trended that night and the next day, with people making mean jokes about his appearance.
By the end of his first day in the house, the conversation around him started to change. Laycon was more than meets the eyes and everyone could see it. Soon, fans of the show began to dig up information about every housemate. It turns out that the one who was the butt of the joke is actually a first-class graduate from the University of Lagos and a brilliant rapper.
By the end of the first week, Laycon became one of the most liked, respected and talked-about housemates of the season. His social media was growing rapidly. In just the space of a few hours, after he entered the house, his Twitter following went from 1,500 to 20,000 followers.
By the end of the first month, he had the biggest and most vocal fan base this season, The Icons. He was winning tasks, proving how mentally sound he was, and stealing hearts with his random bars-dropping.
But he got derailed along the line, falling head over heels for another housemate, Erica, who didn’t want to be with him in that way. It soon started to affect his game and personality until other housemates (Neo, Praise, and Vee) helped him get out of his funk.
At this point, fans of the show could already see that the competition was between Laycon and Erica. She tied with him for most-talked-about and went neck in neck with him for the most-followed housemate on Social media. That is until he became the first Lockdown housemate to hit a million followers on Instagram.
Both of them started the show as friends but Laycon’s feelings got in the way and ended their budding friendship. Their once rosy relationship took a nosedive after Ebuka asked a question about Laycon saying Erica tried to kiss him. She got upset with Laycon, tried to figure out when these almost-kisses happened, then got angry after he refused to talk to her about his statement.
His refusal to talk about their ‘almost-kisses’ continued to irk her all week until her anger morphed into rage. By the end of that week, after their Saturday party, Erica had let her anger get out of hand and land her into trouble. She was disqualified the following day for breaking a bunch of Big Brother’s rules.
It became quite clear afterwards, that Laycon had the best chance of winning the show. He was put up for possible eviction a couple of times but he always pulled through, leading the polls by a large margin. A vox-pop conducted by Netng proves that many viewers expected that Laycon would win the show.
Then on Sunday, September 28, 2020, at the live show, Ebuka announced that Laycon had won Big Brother Naija Lockdown. He gets to walk away with the N30 million naira cash prize, a brand new Innoson motors SUV, a two-bedroom apartment, several trips, other millions in prizes won from games in the house, and a year of supplies.
Laycon went from being an upcoming singer with a few songs to becoming a millionaire with hit singles in 10 weeks, all thanks to Big Brother Naija and MultiChoice.
