With the announcement last night, of the death of President Umar Musa Yar’adua, the Nigerian state has been thrown into mourning.
Yar’adua, who was battling a kidney and heart problem, had not been seen publicly since he left the country for treatment in Saudi Arabia on Monday November 23, 2009. He returned early this year, to Abuja, shortly after the Senate declared his assistant, Goodluck Jonathan Acting President.
Believed to be holed inside Aso Rock, the seat of power, the president did not make any public appearance until the announcement of his death yesterday.
Reliable sources tell NET Yar’adua will be buried this afternoon, at 2:00PM Nigerian time.
The Acting President has already declared today a work-free day, and urged Nigerians to embark on a seven-day mourning.
Thousands, including top CEOs, government officials, politicians, business leaders and tycoons are already abandoning all engagements; heading to Abuja and Katsina to pay their last respects to the late president.
Yar’adua is the first Nigerian civilian president to die in ‘power’.
However, the president died with his public image in tatters, following repeated criticisms and protests from notable Nigerians and millions of youths, over his ‘refusal’ to resign because of his failing health. The political turmoil that followed, and the shenanigans that enveloped Abuja crippled governance for months, and many blamed Yar’aduas’ wife Turai and his closest associates for the endless manipulation.
It is expected that Goodluck Jonathan will now be confirmed as President. It is also expected that he will appoint a vice.
The next Presidential elections are already scheduled for 2011.
The late President Yar’Adua was 58. He was born on August 15, 1951.
