‘The basic problems are that Nigerian economic system is flawed. The Arab spring was started by someone who was ready to stick out his neck’. These were the words of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi as he spoke to youth at the Future Awards Symposium.
Ideas exchanged hands as youth from all walks of life gathered at The Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre on Monday, March 19, 2012 to listen to inspiring guest speakers.
The organiser and Director of the Future Awards Project, Chude Jideonwo, kicked of his discussion with an engaging call to action from the participants at the symposium. He said ‘this is no time for dead clichés. This is a hall pulsating with energy. Let us talk sincerely to ourselves about our challenges’.
The Vice President of the World Bank’s Africa Division, Obiageli Ezekewesili, who also spoke at the event, said ‘once there is an agreement that the old generation has failed, the next step would be to address the problem of governance. Youths are no longer spectators, they want to be players and they want to get their hands dirty to make a change.’
Other speakers included Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, Ekiti state Governor, Kayode Fayemi, Pat Utomi of the Lagos Business School, and Ndidi Nwuneli of LEAP Africa. The event was hosted by Tolu Ogunlesi, and Adaure Achumba.
The event, sponsored by First Bank, Enough Is Enough Nigeria and International Republic Institute, will be broadcast on Channels Television this week.
