Good And Bad Tales From MTV’s Fifth Birthday Gig

When urban music channel MTV base decided to roll out the drums in celebration of their fifth year anniversary they probably had one thing in mind: to give party lovers an event to talk about for a while.

MTV base, launched in 2005, is MTV’s 100th channel, and the first dedicated to the African continent.

So on Friday, March 12, 2010 all roads led to exquisite club Tribeca, in Lagos, as industry players, chart-topping and exciting new artistes and fun-lovers besieged the venue of a party predicted to set a standard in how to stage a world- class party.

Sadly, contrary was the case, as the party was almost marred by organizational lapses in almost every aspect. From coordination to logistics, the organizers struggled to get it right. They fell short in adequately planning an event of this magnitude. However, they scored high in security as the security company curtailed the uninvited crowd outside vying to enter the venue.

Although the event could have been better if not for the hitches, the artistes that graced the stage to perform all gave a good account of themselves. Omawumi, Eldee da Don, BankyW, NaetoC, YQ, MI, Ice Prince and Jesse jags all gave guest and fellow artistes something to cheer overcoming the hiccups that came from the poor sound connection.
Since its five-year stay in on the continent, MTV base has raised the bar as far as making musical videos is concerned in this part of the world. Not only have they brought out the best in Nigerian music videos directors, they have also taken Nigerian music to the next level; inspiring artistes to put their best foot forward and take their game to a global level.

Worst dressed

Singer Waje looked like she just did a lap of sprint with her heavy make- up fighting a battle with sweat to stay on her face, she didn’t do herself any good with the weird combination of colours- purple, blue and black . One would think she was going to perform at the circus and not the MTV party.

Best Dressed

Eunice Omole would easily pass as the best-dressed of the night, with her cute three-coloured tube dress and peep-toe sandals. Rapper Naeto C sure knows how to keep it simple and still make a fashion statement. Decked in a checked shirt atop a pair of jeans with dark shades to compliment it, he did look simply handsome. Fellow rapper MI also made a statement with his white jacket.

Admirable couple

Actress Dakore Egbuson and  Lou were spotted on the red carpet hand in hand and beaming as they posed for the red carpet. It appears the couple has decided to put their affair in the full glare of the public as they have recently been attending events together.

Azadus Resurfaces

You can definitely be forgiven if you have to take a few minutes to remember who Azadus is and what he does. The singer who made waves in the late nineties alongside acts like Tony Tetuila, Plantashun Boiz and Ruff Rugged & Raw before going into oblivion was spotted on the red carpet.

Casually dressed in a white T-shirt on jeans, the one- time hit- maker told NET he’s ‘working on new stuff, there are a lot of people doing music now the way it isn’t supposed to be done and the youths will feel this’

Toni Payne Steps Out

When she introduced herself as ‘Toni Payne’ at the future awards last month, she gave us a clue that she was moving ahead and leaving her sour marriage behind. NET spotted former Mrs. Akande on the red carpet at the MTV base fifth anniversary party in company of Zara and W4 who are artistes under her management.

However, she also came with another artiste Ray J who claims to be under her management. Toni Payne is busy these days; focusing all her attention on her PR Company under which she handles different talents. She recently struck a deal with veteran singer Onyeka Onwenu in that regard.
