The UEFA Champions League round of 16 continued on Tuesday night, February 21, with an astonishing 14 goals scored in two matches played.
Sergio Aguero and Radamel Falcao each scored twice while the latter missed a penalty in a pulsating encounter in Manchester which ended 5-3 in City’s favour.
Raheem Sterling put City ahead after 26 minutes, but Falcao equalised for Monaco just six minutes later with a diving header.
Youngster Kylian Mbappe Lottin then put Monaco in front after 40 minutes as the French league leaders went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Falcao had the chance to put Monaco further ahead with a 50th minute penalty, but saw his tame effort saved by City keeper, Willy Caballero.
The Portuguese striker was then made to rue that missed opportunity when Aguero made it 2-2 after 58 minutes with a low strike that trickled through the Monaco keeper’s gloves.
However, Monaco regained the lead three minutes later through Falcao, who made up for his penalty miss with a sublime chip over Caballero.
Aguero would not be outdone, though, as he fired in a first-time volley to get City back on level terms again after 71 minutes.
The breathless match swung fully in City’s favour after Aguero’s goal, with John Stones sliding in their fourth while Leroy Sane capped off an entertaining match with City’s fifth in the 82nd minute.
Meanwhile in Germany, Atletico came away from their first leg match against Leverkusen with a vital 4-2 victory.
Having come close to opening the scoring off a defender’s wayward clearance that crashed off the Leverkusen crossbar, Atletico took the lead after 17 minutes through Saul Niguez‘s curling effort.
Antoine Griezmann made it 2-0 after 25 minutes while Kevin Gameiro scored Atleti’s third with a second half penalty after Karim Bellarabi had pulled one back for Leverkusen late in the first half.
A Stefan Savic own goal gave Leverkusen some hope after 68 minutes but former Chelsea and Liverpool striker, Fernando Torres put Atletico in commanding position for the second leg with their fourth after 86 minutes.
The second leg matches of these ties will take place on March 15, 2017, with Monaco needing a two-goal win to reach the quarter-finals.
Leverkusen on their part need a three-goal win away in Madrid to reach the next stage.
