Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke has sparked conversation online by challenging Afrobeats megastars to do more for the Nigerian film industry. In a recent Instagram post, the 43-year-old actor accused top musicians of failing to use their global platforms to promote Nollywood, despite Nigerian filmmakers consistently celebrating their international successes.
Okeke highlighted what he sees as a one-sided relationship between the country’s music and film sectors. He argued that artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema have the influence to actively champion Nigerian cinema and create international opportunities for its talents. “You know how we carry our Afrobeats music on our heads? We say big three, big five, big this; we have almost idolized ourselves,” Okeke wrote. “Imagine your big names—Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Rema—don’t you watch Nigerian films? Haven’t you seen any actor you can actively promote?”
The actor also critiqued musicians who dabble in Nollywood as executive producers, suggesting their impact could be greater if they publicly endorsed actors, producers, and filmmakers. “Publish your own 2025 baddest Nollywood films, baddest actors, baddest producers—showcase them the way you are showcased overseas,” Okeke urged. “We are all cousins. We are all together. Our actresses know you. Why not speak proudly of our cinema on the world stage?”
