- John Dramani Mahama takes over as head of state
Vice President John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in as president of Ghana during an emergency session of parliament, in accordance with the country’s constitution.
The swearing in took place yesterday July 24, 2012, hours after President John Atta-Mills passed away. Mahama is the 4th president of the 4th Republic of Ghana.
‘I wish Ghanaians to be assured that all is well. We are going to maintain the peace, unity and stability that Ghana is noted for’, 53-year-old Mahama said.
He has also declared a week of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.
Mahama served as Minister of Communications from 1998 to 2001. In 2009, he was elected as Vice President.
