Just in case you’re thinking that I am one, nah! But who says everybody must be straight. Who says other people don’t deserve the life they choose… Gays deserve their freedom anywhere.
We must focus on things that bring us together rather than the things that divide us. And this is why religious and ethnic bias have continued to hinder our progress as a nation.
The nations that have allowed people live by their lifestyles are known to be more developed and progressive, and that is what I think is the missing gap in our pretentious life as a nation.
Some of the most brilliant people in any field of endeavor that I have known are among the GLBTQ family, and I have no doubt in my mind that lack of this self-expression as occasioned by the Nigerian law and stigma is a minus in the prospect chart as a developing nation.
If our country’s 14-year law to lock up gays is not in place, if the police will face important civic and safety issue rather than looking for perceived inappropriate attitudes through the opportunity this law has given them to arrest and extort, if family members concern themselves about the witchcrafts that have snatched the glory of their children rather than busy themselves with how demonic it is to be gay, perhaps our society will be better for it.
As a guy, you might have been asked if you’re gay because you gesture a little bit too much, or that you like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift or Adele a little bit too much. Tell them to lock you up with their sister to confirm.
You can have a friend like me who don’t care about people being gay, and not those who would ask you if you have sought ‘assistance’, as if being gay is a mental illness.
If you don’t want to get annoyed hearing a friend saying gays should be burnt stark-naked as is done to thieves in Lagos, there are thousand people of your kind to turn to, especially in this age of social media.
Living in denial is tedious enough, living at the mercy of straight people is adding to your headache. So, keep your weakness to yourself until you find your type or in a queer-friendly country.
