Movies are, for many reasons, an integral part of our livelihood. Beyond the entertainment they provide, they are sometimes a reflection of who we are or who we want to be. Some movies are perfect in creating blissful nostalgia for the audience but some just find a way to become instant classics.
Here are some of the movies that are most likely to remain in the memory of Nigerians for a long time:
Coming To America: Released in 1988 and featuring Eddie Murphy, it’s a story about an African prince who finds love and his queen on his first visit to America.
Black Panther: The Marvel movie was released in 2018 and is important because it is the first superhero movie centred around black people. Although set in a fictional African country, Wakanda, it pays attention to some of the issues in the continent, including the activities of Boko Haram.
The Wedding Party: This movie released by EbonyLife films in 2016 broke several box-office records. It gave an inside view to the love shared between one of the most popular celebrity couples, Banky W and Adesua Etomi. It was the most dramatic and lavish wedding party that included bitter exes, dissatisfied parents, an insecure virgin bride, uninvited guests and a robbery.
Three Idiots: A Bollywood production had to end up on this list as Nigerians are avid viewers of their movies. One of the most popular Indian movies ever released in Nigeria is Three Idiots. It follows three friends who are on a journey to find themselves.
Osuofia in London: This was one of the first popular Nollywood films to be shot across two countries. The fact that Nkem Owoh who plays Osuofia in the movie was hilarious is only an added bonus. It’s about the drama that follows a village man on his quest to make it big in London.
