Former Barcelona FC coach Tito Vilanova died on Friday, April 25, 2014, after battling throat cancer for over two years.
Vilanova had undergone emergency surgery on Thursday at Clinica Quiron in Barcelona, as gastric complications arose recently. According to Barca, Vilanova, 45, had been in the hospital for a week.
Barcelona issued this statement via Twitter: ‘The FC Barcelona is in immense mourning. Tito Vilanova has died at the age of 45. May he rest in peace.‘
Vilanova succeeded Pep Guardiola at Barcelona and won the Spanish league title in 2012, his only season in charge.
