Sometime in March, 2012, his face appeared on almost every site and blog in the country. In case you missed the story here is the background.
His name is Okeoghene John Igwhiwotho, hails from Isoko, Delta state. He was diagnosed with diabetic mellitus type 1 and 2 at age 12.
Oke, an ex-student of the Federal Government College and an Engineering student of the Obafemi Awolowo University was forced out of school due to his degenerating health. In 2006, his condition grew worse and he was bedridden for six years 2006-2012.
During this period, he lost his toes as well as the sole of his feet.
Oke came public, seeking for the sum of N5 million to undergo a surgery in India to save his life and his legs.
Nigerians in their humane nature made donations to assist him, however the bigger help came through the Governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who responded to the case and took full responsibility for Oke’s treatment.
NET recently caught up with Oke having returned from his surgery in India. In a chat, Oke expressed his gratitude to Nigerians and to the governor for the help which was provided for him to stay alive.
He tells us he’s due to return to India soon for the final surgery which would also include the removal of the cast on his leg and physiotherapy to help him get back fully to his feet.
He also says he plans to go back to school in the shortest time possible to continue in his dreams of becoming an Engineer.
Oke also revealed his plans to form a Non Governmental Organisation NGO, solely to assist diabetic patients get help.
