The spate of sour happenings in Nigeria is almost reaching boiling point. Insecurity is assuming an alarming dimension; politically motivated killings have left the police as mere spectators, more youths are taking up arms to fight against the government; the number of unemployed graduates is swelling by the day; incessant fuel scarcity threatens to bring the country to her knees and the cloud of uncertainty hovers above the Nigerian state, following the power games going on in the Federal capital.
With the recurring Jos crisis becoming a hydra- headed monster that is claiming souls innocent and the government at a loss on how to provide a panacea, the Nigeria of today isn’t what the founding fathers wished for.
And it’s not only the masses that are suffering – singers, actors and entertainers generally have been the target of armed robbery attacks over the years. Last year comedian Gbenga Adeyinka’s home was burgled by armed robbers who allegedly broke a bottle on the humour merchant’s head. In the past, award- winning musician 2face Idibia has unluckily fallen victim to armed robbers who left him with bullet wounds on one of such attacks
It also appears driving on the road isn’t safe any longer these days. Banky W, 9ice and many others have been attacked on the expressway, with OAP Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi even losing her SUV to armed bandits
The latest victim is Djinee who got more than he bargained for on his way home from Victoria Island in Lagos on Friday, March 5, 2010.
The singer recounts the ordeal in a chat with NET ‘‘it happened last Friday. I was driving in traffic on my way back from the island around 9: 30pm when two guys wielding guns accosted me. There was a bit of an argument and stuff.
A lot of commotion with people shouting so they couldn’t take much- my phone was the only thing they collected.’’
Etcetera wasn’t as lucky – Just like Gbemi, he also lost his car to robbers on his way home from a radio interview last year.
Others who have been robbed in the recent past include Comedienne Princess, Tee A, DJ Jimmy JATT, Mike Aremu, Weird MC and Skid Ikemefunna.
