Actor and singer, David Jones David will be moderating a panel at the MTN Anti Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) event themed: ‘Share Facts on Drugs. Save Lives’, to discuss drug and substance abuse on Friday, June 25, 2021.
There is a reason David Jones David will be moderating the event: He has been an avid campaigner against substance abuse especially among the youths.
The award-winning actor uses his platforms to speak on the dangers of drug abuse.
The event, organised by MTN Foundation in partnership with Netng and Business Day is in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking also known as ‘World Drug Day’, observed annually on June 26 since 1989.
MTN Foundation launched the Anti Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP) in December 2018 to create awareness about drug and substance abuse and to discourage non-users from taking the first step to possible addiction.
According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crimes (UNODC), 14.4 percent of Nigerians are presently engaged in drug abuse. This statistics is higher than the global rate of 5.5 per cent.
David was a panelist in the 2020 edition where he spoke passionately about his interest in the campaign against drug abuse.
David confirmed that he had never used drugs, but has become an anti-drug abuse campaigner due to how rampant drug abuse is.
He said “It’s right in your face… When you turn to the left, you see someone doing drugs, when you turn to the right, you see someone doing drugs.”
He will be joined by Odunayo Sanya, the Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation; Pastor Tony Rapu, Senior Pastor, House of Freedom; Bada Akintunde-Johnson, Country Manager, ViacomCBS Networks Africa; Dr. Maymunah Kadiri who is the founder of Pinnacle Medical Services; Mr. Oliver Stolpe, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Olawale Eso.
