When it comes to doing a story about Dagrin, the name YQ will surely resonate.
Their ‘Efimile’ joint, was and is still a crowd favorite anytime. YQ was Dagrin’s best friend and naturally, they shared a lot in common within and outside the music circle. YQ spoke exclusively to NET on Dagrin’s 5th memorial anniversary.
Dagrin’s death will be 5 years next week, how will you describe the vacuum he left behind?
One of his major dreams was for indigenous rappers and hip-hop acts to have a permanent ground in the Nigerian music industry, Africa and beyond. He fulfilled this to a great extent, which is evident in the emergence of great talents, who believe in indigenous rap music and are doing very well for themselves at the moment, as well as millions of fans who have shown great appreciation for the genre in recent times. Akogun helped indigenous rap gain independence. He’s the Saviour (smiles).
He was your best friend before he died, 5 years after, what do you miss most about him?
All I can say is I miss a true friend and a motivator. In all sincerity, words can’t explain how I feel.
Do you have any plan to honour his memory on his 5th anniversary?
Of course, y’all should anticipate it. Industry nite will be honouring him on Wednesday, 22nd April. I’m using this medium to invite everyone to come out and be a part of the celebration of a legend. Huge thanks to the organisers for acknowledging the legacy Dagrin left behind.
Are you still in touch with his family?
I’m in touch with his cousin, Tee blaq but I haven’t spoken to his mum and sister, Bukky in a while.
