Good music considerably boosts brain organization and ability in both children and adults. Don’t forget I said ‘GOOD MUSIC’ not this cheap organization of sounds we call music in Nigeria. It is epileptic and insane that mediocrity is celebrated in this nation with endorsements, accolades and massive pay checks given to these acts.
It so bad that everytime I watch baselines on MTV or lyrics to go on HipTv, I see a lot of discrepancies because what the artiste is saying is utterly different from what is scrolling on the screen. This is MEDIOCRITY at the highest order. It is awards season again and guess who will be carting away these awards? THE MEDIOCRES.
People think anything that is receiving heavy rotation on radio as commercial music. Whatever their definition, one thing is certain: Commercial music is the heart of the music industry which pumps the blood that keeps it alive.
There are those artists who do a masterful job of observing their own artistic values while delicately balancing the demands for commercial music without breaking a sweat. Artists like 2Face, Sound Sultan and the rest have pushed the envelope of creativity for years, their caliber sublime talent and vision are rare.
Dexterity in albums is becoming obsolete in Nigeria, we have been confined to a box of mediocrity, a typical Nigerian album will have track 1 to 7 talking about money, girls, ass, breasts, sex, bottles and other misogynist utterances in different languages letting the young ones believe if you don’t do music, you can’t make it in Nigeria.
Artistes are selling out their creative integrity by conforming to industry version of what’s popular (i.e. what’s selling). It becomes very obvious to me that the problem is not commercial music, but rather the perception and definition of it.
Commercial music can make sense, commercial music can encourage the kids, commercial music can enlighten the populace, commercial can tell a story, commercial music can also be poetry.
QUIT CELEBRATING MEDIOCRITY!!!!
Commercial music can be creative too; STOP celebrating mediocrity
