He is 25 today…
‘I never ask you to write about me. I’ll be happy if nobody wrote about me, just listen to my music and if you don’t like it, listen to someone else.’
So, what exactly makes one of Nigeria’s most respected acts (at least musically), Damini Ogulu a.k.a Burna Boy tick?
Not many of his peers would constantly get away with a blatant disdain and face-off with reporters – or bloggers (Not that he makes a good case for himself with his shenanigans) – as it would have damning effects on a quite blossoming career.
Imagine a scenario: Far away in a land of milk and honey, a young and respectable bee which produces some of the most refined honey gets totally ignored by ‘honey reporters’… wherein lies the bee’s accolades and ultimately, success?
Born July 2, 1991 to a respected music family – Benson Idonije is his grandfather – you could argue it is the uncompromising confidence he has in his music, as he quite characteristically highlighted with his statement:
‘Music for me is about my environment, my experience, and how I feel. It’s not about how someone else feels or what someone else is doing except they are doing it to me, for me or with me so it doesn’t really affect me.’
Burna Boy, not known for shying away from controversy – as a matter of fact, controversies appear to have become some sort of housefly perching on the ‘shit’ he leaves behind – continues to write his rules… For good, or for bad.
After releasing his Burn Notice and Burn Identity mixtapes, he made a grand statement with his debut, L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity) in 2013. A critically acclaimed, laudable album.
Following his departure from Aristokrat Records, a lukewarm reception to his second offering, On A Spaceship by critics and music lovers, and more prying into his carefree lifestyle only propelled him to harbour more resentment for ‘keyboard warriors’.
Don Gorgon is currently out of the country – to a land he was reported to have been controversially ‘banned’ – and with already strong warnings to mighty ‘keyboard kings’ to STOP reporting him; his return in a couple of weeks would likely take interesting turns.

What if – and a big WHAT IF that is – reporters start playing a blind eye to his strides, negative or positive.
We can only wait to see how far that’d take him.
Happy birthday Burna.
