Nigerian Entertainment Today can confirm that Pop Star and Mo’Hits artiste D’banj will not be attending the Channel O Music Awards as announced earlier. D’banj will be missing from the stage this evening Friday, November 11, 2011 as he is honoured with a ‘Special Recognition Award‘.
Sources in South Africa are telling us that D’banj allegedly told the organizers he has ‘bigger issues to deal with’.
But those close to D’banj, and who are familiar with the developing situation say he was actually at the airport yesterday (Thursday) prepared to travel to South Africa for the event. ‘He turned back when he realised they got him an economy return ticket. D’banj only flies ‘First Class’, an insider told us early today.
We are told that someone has now gone to his residence in Lekki, Lagos, to record an acceptance speech which will be played during the show when his award is announced.
An E-mail sent to Mo’Hits boss Don Jazzy was not replied as at the time of this report, just as we could not immediately reach D’banj for comments.
According to Leslie ‘Lee’ Kasumba, Channel O Africa Manager, D’banj was chosen for the award because he has shown growth in his career over the years and he represented a breed of African urban artists who are the African dream.
Out of a of 14 categories, 15 Nigerian artistes have made the list; 2Face Idibia,D’ banj, Naeto C, Banky W, Wizkid, Darey, Waje, Ice Prince, Brymo, Samklef,Jesse Jagz, Flavour, Tiwa Sawage, J Martins and the amazing vocalist Asa.
The awards show will take place at the Taboo Sandton in Johannesburg, 9PM.

Dbanj is one of my best artist, in this case, Dbanj has no album that can last 5 to10 years, that how to know a legend. 2face and ASA are the African artist that their music can last as long as 20- 100 years.lets stop all this Nigeria roudness that is killing us,business class, economy class, what matters is for him to go and make himself and his country proud. All I know is that there are times when one has to get off his hi horse and represent the cause. D’Banj is a great artiste and no doubt Channel O has mad money off him, but to diss the network and the award ceremony like that over something he could have paid for himself isn’t on. You don’t get to the airport and then go home cause you’re a first class guy. Frankly if he was known to be a first class guy I believe Ch. O would have known and by the way why didn’t his manager ask about all that before hand?
We boo our 9ja Super Eagles for refusing to show up over wages and conditions, but we praise someone who won’t even get off his high horse to receive an award? Understandable if he was nominated but this is an achievement award. D’banj should have taken one for the team. Wizkid now gets 3M for shows, should him and Banky also say they want 1st class?

Dbanj’s reason’s not too genuine. Humility matters most in all endeavours. I cant accuse Chinua Achebe for refusing to show for 2 Nigerian National award cos he had a genuine reason. Meanwhile, 2face outruns Dbanj in music by far. If there’s “no long thing”, “My people, notin dey happen”.
