The blast occurred at Karshi Taxi Park, Abuja at about 8.20pm, close to another park where almost 70 people died in a previous blast on Monday April 14, 2014. Witnesses say the explosion was targeted at a police checkpoint near a bus station.
Speaking with BBC, the head of Nigeria’s emergency management agency, Abbas Idriss, said 19 people were killed in the blast and 60 others were injured.
The latest attack comes just days before Abuja is set to host the World Economic Forum on Africa. Figures released last month showed that Nigeria is now Africa’s biggest economy.
No group has claimed responsibility for the Thursday attack.
