She entered the night with 10 nominations – and singer Beyonce emerged, early this morning, with a solid six wins, including gongs for Song of the year and Best R&B song (for her hit single ‘single ladies – Put a ring on it’).
Apart from now setting the record for the most awards won in a single year by a solo female, Knowles will now have a total of 16 Grammys sitting on her shelve as she continues to dominate global pop/R&B music.
The six categories Beyonce came tops are : ‘Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Song Of the Year and Best R&B song.
Taylor Swift didn’t pack as much prizes as B, but she went home with four gongs – including the coveted ‘Album of the year’ where Beyonce was also in contention.
Other big Grammy winners include Beyonce’s husband Jay Z, The Black Eyed Peas, Kings Of Leon, Lady GaGa and Eminem. The only Nigerian nominee Femi Kuti lost the Best Contemporary World Music album category to Grammy veteran Bela Fleck. Kuti was performing at his ‘Shrine’ in Lagos, when his category was announced. ”It’s not a sad news. It was good Femi was nominated so we are not sad at all; just happy that good music was recognised. Femi just got off the stage and i have not informed him yet”, Yeni Kuti told NET via SMS shortly after Fleck was announced winner.
The 52nd annual Grammy awards held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles; with performances from Lady GaGa, Pink, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, Drake, Beyonce and many others.
