If you thought BBNaija was popular when it aired, try checking again during the lockdown. While the world was adjusting to moving online with the widespread restrictions on movement and public gatherings, BBNaija fans, who have already thrived online, took it a step further.
By conducting a survey of 200 young Nigerians and by studying the activities of social media users across the company’s owned platforms – Netng, 234Star, Neusroom, and Orin, the ID Africa research team got some insights on the habits and activities of social media users during the lockdown.
There was a clear increase in the amount of engagement surrounding Big Brother Naija related content during the lockdown.
Articles, videos and quizzes created around past BBNaija housemates garnered hundreds and thousands of engagement and comments per post. Ths fervour was carried over to content relating to the new Mercy & Ike show which premiered on DStv in April.
For example, A quiz about Mercy and Ike on Netng’s Twitter garnered over 7,000 engagements within a few hours. Two videos stories about the most shocking BBNaija reunion moments had over 50,000 views each in less than 20 days.
If you know the fans of the Big Brother Naija show, this information will hardly be surprising. BBNaija fans stan hard and relish every opportunity to support the show or their favourite housemate. From Tacha Titans to the Mercy Mercenaries, these well-organised groups of fans are quick to react, good or bad, to any and every mention of their faves.
