BBC journalists on Monday February 18, 2013 went on a 24-hour strike to protest job cuts at the media house.
Journalists and reporters mounted a protest outside of the BBC’s central London studios. Although programs went on, many shows were disrupted.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said it called the strike after failing to reach an agreement with management over the redeployment of 30 staff members facing compulsory redundancy.
In response, a BBC spokesman said in a statement, that the union’s actions are disappointing and that the BBC is working hard to ensure that staff are redeployed wherever and will continue to work with the unions to ensure that their members receive the right redeployment support.
The BBC is funded mainly by a mandatory 145.50 pounds ($228) annual levy on all households with color TVs. Britain’s government froze the fee in 2010, and the corporation has been forced to make cuts.
