Dear Sis, I am getting frustrated staying at home while I wait for admission. I am 23 years old and I finished secondary school at 18.
I have done different exams and made some papers but there is always one thing or the other that happens and prevents me from getting into the university and I do not have enough money for private universities.
Please help me. I am getting frustrated!
Melody.
Hi Melody, I can feel your plight from this E-mail o!
First off, let me say that the fact that you have kept going shows you have persistence and trust me, that is a good character trait.
I think education is important and University education is beneficial, not just for what we learn in class, but what it teaches us about life, and the contacts we make.
Of course, there are good examples of people who either dropped out or just didn’t go into university but are still successful. So, best believe that success will come your way!
Please keep trying to get into school. Since you’ve identified those things that prevent you from getting in, you should write them down and find out how to tackle each one. Is it your grades? Maybe you need to cut down on the distractions and study harder. Is it the centre you use? Is it the Post-UTME? Or is it the particular course you want to study? Or are you stuck on a particular university that you simply must go to?
Please check these things and see what you can improve on or change.
Secondly, I think while you wait, you should use this time to learn a trade, a skill or a new language. You can take French classes for example, or learn production or decor. These skills usually end up giving you an edge later in life. (Or even today sef. Imagine if we could parlez francais together?)
The next thing i would advise money-wise, is for you to start something!
What are you passionate about? What current skills do you have? What can you do that requires minimum capital but brings money in?
Can you cook? Bake? Hey! People always need birthday cakes!
Can you sew? I need a tailor! And so do thousands of Nigerians.
Can you write? Play an instrument? Paint? Draw?
Find something to do with what you currently have so that you will be able to take care of some bills, and who knows, maybe even afford part-time courses.
And that’s another tip- take a course! Some Universities like LASU offer part-time studies, and there are some courses you can take from other institutions. Do your research and work on it.
Lastly I would say, try to work with someone. There are some jobs you can take up that don’t necessarily require a University degree.
Hope these tips help?
Wish you all the best once again!
And hey guys, if you are reading this and have tips for Melody, could you send them to me?
And of course, if you have any questions for me, you can also send them.
Remember, I always have an opinion!

My dear i like ur advise is wise and good
What i sugest is this find something meaningful and do it could either be job, work or even catrin and still await the the admision. Remember idleness or lonlyness is the devil workshop. God bles u.
You forgot to give her the best advice of all. She should try n go for the prelim or predegree programs of universities. Instead of sitting at home, its easier to enter 4 a 1yr predegree program of ur choice school, and dis is even anoda method of gaining admission after 1yr, rather than d conventional direct post ume method. Mind u, getting in2 a prelim or predegree prog is so easy, n it will take u out of d house cuz u’l b receivin lectures like normal students.
Trust me, dis was how i got in2 skul. Unad 4 example offers a 2yr predegree prog afta which u get admittd in2 200 level if u pass well. Bt d best advice u can get is: DONT JUST STAY AT HOME. D more u stay, d more ur brain stagnates. Gud luck
