The singer, who had earlier announced the pair’s engagement on January 1, 2012, stated that ‘Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly’.
‘There will be no wedding at this time’, her statement read.
Franklin, 69, and Wilkerson were planning to wed in June or July aboard a private yacht in Miami, Florida. The singer has been twice married before.
The ‘Queen of Soul’, as she is adoringly called by fans, stated that the pair ‘won’t be saying more on the matter owing to ‘the very personal and sensitive nature of it’.
‘We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends’, she added.
The legendary diva, who has accumulated a total of 24 Grammy awards in her career, and who was recently hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment, has since returned to performing for select audiences.
