A cool Tuesday evening was disrupted by an alarming announcement by American news agency Associated Press’ Twitter account that President Barack Obama had been injured in explosions at the White House.
AP’s Corporate Communications office soon reported that the tweet was false , explaining that the account had been hacked.
‘I appreciate you saying that’, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney replied. ‘The President is fine, I just spoke with him’.
‘The @AP twitter account has been hacked. The tweet about an attack at the White House is false. We will advise more as soon as possible’, AP correspondent in Nigeria, Jon Gambrell announced via his Twitter.
The AP Twitter account has been suspended.
This comes days after NET’s official website thenetng.com was hacked. On the early hours of Thursday, April 18, 2013, hackers illegally gained possession of NET’s website, demanding a sum of $1,200 as ransom.
NET’s publisher Ayeni Adekunle in a statement released hours after the incident said the company would not be negotiating with the hackers. The hackers have reduced their ransom to $200, but NET continues to work closely with our registrar Godaddy and IT staff to repossess our domain.
