By Kayode Badmus

It’s been over three years since music fans in the Nigeria and perhaps the entire continent got overwhelmed by the disintegration of one of the biggest music alliances Africa has ever seen.
The break-up of music power house Mo’Hits, founded by Michael Collins Ajereh (Don Jazzy) and Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo (D’banj) remains in the news years after the major players have moved on.
This was confirmed months ago when D’banj revealed on ‘The Truth’ with Olisa Adibua that Dr. Sid was responsible for the break up. Expectedly, Dr. Sid and his Mavin label mate, D’Prince promptly responded.

Music fans miss the drama and beautiful music Don Jazzy and D’banj churned out at social gatherings, and of course the interviews where the Don was the ‘never speaking boss.’ And D’banj, the ever active outgoing side kick who relates what the Don whispers to him.
This act really worked for Nigerians and perhaps remains one of the things we all miss most about them.
Fans have also missed certain things which we might never have the opportunity to bring to reality.
- Best men for their marriages
Both D’banj and Don Jazzy are in their mid-30s and it is expected that marriage bells would start ringing soon. No doubt, if they were still together, fans might have been blessed to see them act as ‘best man’ at their each other’s wedding but this may never come to pass.
We might have even been blessed with a joint wedding which even Psquare failed to give us. If the same day wedding was asking for too much, fans would at least have been blessed with a ‘best man’ role by the duo. This role would now be passed to their younger brothers – D’Prince (Don Jazzy) and K-Switch (D’banj).
- Lacklustre 10th anniversary

While many would blame everyone including Wiz Khalifa‘s ex-wife for this, it is obvious a better, well packaged event could have been witnessed had the power brace of Don Jazzy and D’banj been together.
They started together a little over 10 years ago and so a decade anniversary of Mohits (not just D’banj) would have had the entire continent stand still.
- Losing a selling brand

Fans and prospective business partners would have preferred the duo were still a team despite perceived or acclaimed successes of both camps. Nobody has proven this but it is expected that certain brands would have withdrawn their ventures with the duo since they could no longer get the ‘complete package’ they expected.
This means the duo would probably have made more money had they remained together. It can also be assumed that if a Mo’hits break-up never occurred, the unceremonious departure of singer Wande Coal from Don Jazzy’s camp (Mavin) may have never happened. This is putting into consideration the Black Diamond’s now broken loyalty after the Mo’hits break-up.
- Of course more hits
Between them, D’banj and Don Jazzy made more hits than fans could savour. Somebody once said D’banj being on the hit track ‘Dorobucci‘ would have made the jam even more infectious. Now, close your eyes and imagine Don jazzy’s beats and voice on all those D’banj cuts that have refused to blow!
Imagine a duet between D’banj and Tiwa Savage with Don Jazzy ad-libs on the background. Oh, how much we miss this team.
It has been three years since the break-up but the Mo’hits saga remains an interesting case study for observers as well as a learning precept for emerging teams and people trying to grow winning brands with ‘friends’.
Whether a Mo’Hits reunion would be possible remains open with many hoping it does.
This is further strengthened by regular reunion of former band mates, Plantanshun Boiz (2Face, Black Face & Faze) as well as a planned come back by the Remedies (Eedriz Abdulkareem, Tony Tetuila and Eddy Remedy) who are among the pioneers of Nigeria’s contemporary hip hop genre.
