Burna Boy joins the list of prestigious Grammy winners, and Angelique Kidjo is here for it.
On Sunday, March 13, at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, Damini Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy, became the second home-grown Nigerian to win a Grammy award. He was nominated for Best Global Music Album alongside Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Grammy Award-winner Tinariwen. With much joy, he went home with the award.
Multiple Grammy award-winning artiste Angelique Kidjo congratulated the newest member of the Grammy-winning committee. She said “Congratulations on your well-deserved Grammy, Burna Boy.” If you recall, when she won the Grammy last year for the same category, she dedicated her award to Burna Boy and his drive to changing the narrative of African music.
Burna Boy, who won the Best Global Music Album with his fifth studio album, Twice As Tall, expressed his joy by sharing celebratory videos of him and his team when they heard the announcement. Inn his acceptance speech, Burna Boy encouraged artistes in Africa to keep striving for more wins.
Wizkid also joins the winning team as he was the first home-grown Nigerian to win. His win is for Best Music Video for Brown Skin Girl with Beyonce featuring Blue Ivy.
These wins mark a new beginning for Burna Boy and Nigerian artistes as a whole. With regards to how our music is viewed and appreciated.
Congratulations to Burna Boy and Wizkid on their big win. Here’s to more madness this year!
