- Sahr Ngaujah plays the title role in Fela!
With 11 nominations and three awards at the Tony Awards, it’s not surprising that Fela! is still touring the world, three years after it was first staged.
The musical which will kicked off a new series of performances on December 13, 2011 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles will end on January 22, 2012.
We’re told respected US acts like Stevie Wonder, Nas, Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Ziggy Marley, and Smokey Robinson have been highly impressed with the play; with Nas describing Fela! as ‘very important work’. Kanye West says he found the production ‘inspiring’.
The musical’s next stop is the Warner Theatre, Washington, DC on January 26, 2012.
The show opened in 2009 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, with Entertainment heads Jay Z and Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith coming on board as executive producers.
The original Broadway cast spent two weeks in Lagos, Nigeria in April 2011 with the opening performance at the New Afrika Shrine. Subsequent performances took place at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites.
