Who added an ‘S’ to the genre, Fela Kuti created and decided to pack all pop artistes from Africa under that category? DJ Abrante? UK Guardian? Come on! The fact that Davido is a pop star from Nigeria does not make him less a pop star than say Chris Brown or Usher. A pop act is a pop act.
That’s the nonsense misnomer they used to stifle our hip hop many years back, calling Mode 9, Eedris and co, ‘Afro hip hop’ acts. Hip hop is hip hop, whether you’re from China, Venezuela or Nigeria.
See. D’banj is a pop artiste, who happens to be from Nigeria. Wizkid is a pop act. All these Afrobeats nonsense in the name of justifying their classification in an ethnic minority group is mischievous and irresponsible.
And it’s more then a shame that the acts themselves are buying it. Who will save us from these people, The Grammy packs all African acts under the ‘World Beats’ category’, all other international awards have just one category ‘Best Africa Act’.
