Nigerian filmmakers and storytellers have been given a final opportunity to showcase their work on a global stage as the African Film Festival Atlanta (AFFATL) announces a late call for submissions for its 2026 edition.
The festival, which is powered by the African Film & Arts Foundation Inc. (AFAF), is a crucial platform for African and Diasporic cinema in the southeastern United States.
The final deadline for all submissions is January 9, 2026, giving Nigerian creatives a last window to enter their films for consideration in the festival, which runs from March 26th to March 30th, 2026 1.
The Theme: CTRL + CULTURE = AFRICA’S NEXT CINEMA CODE
The 2026 festival is anchored by the timely theme, “CTRL + CULTURE = AFRICA’S NEXT CINEMA CODE.”. This theme is particularly relevant to the dynamic Nigerian film industry, exploring how African filmmakers are leveraging technology, digital innovation, and tools like artificial intelligence to control and shape their own narratives.
The festival aims to spotlight films that reflect the evolving pulse of African cinema, driven by intentional creativity and a renewed ownership of cultural expression.
“We are always looking for stories that challenge stereotypes, celebrate nuance, and center African perspectives in fresh and resonant ways,” said Mojisola Sonoiki, Festival Director. “This festival is about more than cinema; it is about truth-telling, creativity, and connection. As AI and digital platforms shape global narratives, it is vital that our stories, images, and cultural knowledge are present and authentically represented.”

AFFATL welcomes films that reflect the richness, complexity, and brilliance of African and Diaspora experiences. Submissions are strongly encouraged from filmmakers of African descent across all genres. Filmmakers are invited to submit works across the following categories: Narrative Features, Documentary Features, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts
