The office environment may be a new place for those who are fresh out of school or are undergoing their internship.
As a result, such people may have a hard time understanding the way things should be done in such an environment.
Luckily for you, we’re here with an etiquette list which would help you fit in and even stand out positively.
1. Thou shall be punctual

Being punctual generally is good etiquette. It shows the person or people you are going to meet that they are important and their time is valued.
In the workplace, you should make a habit to arrive work on time. It not only helps you get settled on time, but it also allows you to be more efficient and get more work done.
And hey! You never know the day the boss may decide to hold an early morning meeting. It won’t look good on you to just rush in in the middle of a meeting.
2. Thou shall dress appropriately

The office isn’t the right place to show off that new short club dress your friend just sent to you from ‘the abroad’.
Neither is it the place to show off your new belly button piercing or that rose tattoo on your left breast.
Learn to dress the part. It speaks well of you and you get to be addressed with more respect than you would get if you keep showing off distracting body parts or arts.
3. Thou shall observe cell phone control

Please put that phone away during meetings! It’s really rude.
Unless you have an emergency, in which case, you could get someone who’s not in the meeting to answer and call you out of the meeting on the basis of an emergency.
4. Thou shall not steal

Did you put the fried chicken in the fridge? No? Then why take the fried chicken from the fridge?
We may call this petty theft ‘fapping’ but the real name is stealing and surely we were all taught it’s not right to take what’s not yours.
Whoever put the food in there has a reason so don’t take it.
5. Thou shall remember names
It’s very embarrassing for you to call Tobi ‘Tobe’ (who on your very happy day, you call Tobechukwu).
You’ve given him a whole new tribe. Try to remember people’s names and if they’re too difficult to pronounce, ask them for the short form.
P.S: Write the names you have a hard time remembering on your phone until you master them.
Remembering names helps foster team work too.
6. Thou shall be neat and organised

Ensure your work space is neat and organised always.
Untidy work spaces give your colleagues the impression that you’re a messy person and even if that’s the truth, you don’t have to air your dirty laundry outside.
Make sure you dress and look smart and your work space is kept tidy on a daily.
7. Thou shall not play your music too loud

This can be highly distracting, not only to you but to your colleagues.
Rather than be told to turn the volume down, why not take the initiative to do it first?
And if you’re unsure about whether the music is still too loud, ask your colleagues.
And while we’re on the topic of being too loud, we’re not interested in knowing whether or not you’re chewing gum.
8. Thou shall be courteous
It’s much more acceptable to be punctual than to call in after a scheduled appointment to say you’re running 20 minutes late.
However, in a case of emergency, say you’ve suddenly come down with the flu or you just can’t make your appointment or would be late for it, courtesy demands you call and send an email to that effect (to make it official) a few hours before the appointed time.
You need to understand that you are not the only one involved and as such others cannot plan their lives around yours.
So inform them on time of your inability to come in so they can make other arrangements or schedule other meetings and reschedule yours.
