If you are in Lagos or any part of Nigeria and desire some unusual as an entertainment enthusiast, Netflix has got some queer characters and storylines for you.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Season 1: October 26
The openly gay director Greg Berlanti show is behind classic queer films like Broken Hearts Club and this year’s Love, Simon, as well as an executive producer for some of today’s defining teen shows (Supergirl, The Flash, You). And he’s frequently expressed his dedication to telling the queer stories he didn’t have as a child. If his unexpected hit Riverdale — which exists in the same “world” as Sabrina does — is anything to go by (with its own progressive storylines about gay cruising in high school, no less), Chilling Adventures will certainly give us something to chew on.
Big Mouth, Season 2: October 5
This is about Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s vulgar animated series about children undergoing puberty. Big Mouth has proven to be a sensitively-drawn meditation about growing up. Kroll and Goldberg even dedicated an entire episode to exploring one protagonist’s questions surrounding his sexuality. And though the episode ends with him realizing that he is, indeed, straight, other openly gay characters in the series like Matthew (voiced by the perfect-as-always Andrew Rannells) leave the possibility open for future exploration.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno: October 1
There’s a scene in Zack and Miri Make a Porno where the titular Zack attends his and his best friend Miri’s ten-year high school reunion. As Miri flirts with a former classmate (who she doesn’t yet know is gay), Zack unwittingly strikes up a conversation about their careers with the classmate’s boyfriend, Brandon St. Randy. Brandon says he’s a Hollywood actor in “all sorts of movies with all-male casts.” “Like Glengarry Glen Ross?” Zack sincerely asks. “More like…Glen and Garry Suck Ross’ Meaty Cock and Drop Their Hairy Nuts In His Eager Mouth,” Brandon responds, before explaining that he’s a gay porn star. While Zack and Miri Make a Porno — whose title is pretty much self-explanatory — focuses on its straight main characters, Justin Long’s cameo as Brandon St. Randy is one of the movie’s funniest, and worth checking out for its own sake.
Élite, Season 1: October 5
Over the past year, Netflix has dramatically expanded their selection of teen-oriented shows and movies, as well as their selection of original foreign language programming. This month, they will release Élite, which falls under both categories; the Spanish-language miniseries follows three working-class students as they enroll at a prestigious private prep school in Spain. But when their arrival causes class tension between them and the rest of the filthy rich kids they now go to school with, someone ends up murdered — and everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Judging by the trailer, there will be at least one same-sex couple and lots of scandal.
Dancing Queen, Season 1: October 5
Alyssa Edwards’ stints on season five of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Drag Race: All Stars 2 solidified her as a superstar worthy of her own spotlight. From her popularization of the tongue pop to her mystifying portrayal of Joan Crawford, Miss Edwards is a worthy legend in the drag community and beyond. And as a mark of that star power, Netflix has given Alyssa her own show, in which she is the star she was always destined to be. Following her life as a dance teacher by day and drag queen by night, Dancing Queen promises to be just as entertaining as anything else Alyssa Edwards has done.
