Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, was born on March 27, 1981, and today marks the 45th birthday of a Music icon and all-around entertainment icon. Over the years, Banky W has become one of Nigeria’s most respected and influential entertainers. His career spans music, film, business, and politics. Known for his intelligence, creativity, and charisma, he has continually grown while staying connected with his fans, earning his place as one of the true icons of the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Banky W as an Artist

Banky W is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in modern Nigerian music and is often referred to as the “King of African R&B.” Known for his smooth vocals and charismatic delivery, he built a reputation as one of the leading voices of R&B in Nigeria, while also showing his versatility by occasionally blending rap into his sound.
He first gained widespread attention with his debut single “Ebute Metta,” a track that cleverly sampled Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and instantly connected with audiences. After relocating from the United States back to Nigeria in the mid-2000s, Banky W quickly rose to fame and became a household name. He went on to release several hit songs that shaped Nigerian pop culture, including “Strong Ting,” “Lagos Party,” “Yes/No,” “Made for You,” “Jasi,” and “Jaiye Ori Mi.” His 2008 album Mr. Capable played a major role in defining his brand, earning him the popular nickname “Mr. Capable” across the industry. He continued to evolve musically with projects like Back in the Building, The W Experience, and R&BW, each showcasing his growth, range, and consistency as an artist. Banky W as a Record Label Boss

As a record label executive, Banky W co-founded Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) in 2002 alongside his associate Tunde Demuren while they were students in New York. He later officially set up the label in Lagos in 2008. E.M.E was home to a strong lineup of talents, including Wizkid, Skales, Shaydee, Niyola, as well as its official DJ, DJ Xclusive. In 2012, the label released a major compilation album titled Empire Mates State of Mind, which featured popular songs like “Baddest Boy” and “Get Down Tonight,” further establishing E.M.E as a powerhouse in the industry.
Banky W played a crucial role in developing the careers of his artists, most notably Wizkid. Through mentorship, guidance, and quality music production, he helped shape Wizkid’s sound and image, pushing him toward mainstream success. When Wizkid released his debut album Superstar in 2011, Banky W was fully supportive and even featured on the project, appearing on tracks like “Slow Whine.” During their time at E.M.E, both artists collaborated on several songs, building a legacy that contributed significantly to the global rise of Afrobeats.
Banky W as an Actor

Banky W successfully made the move from being a music superstar to becoming a Nollywood actor. Even before acting, he had always shown strong storytelling skills through his music videos, with his creativity clearly seen in visuals for songs like “Jasi” and “Yes/No.”
In 2016, he got his big acting break in The Wedding Party, where he played the lead role of Dozie Onwuka. His performance was widely praised and the movie became a huge commercial success, ranking as one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films of all time. This role proved that he could do more than music and marked the beginning of his acting career.
He went on to hold on to his role as Dozie Onwuka in The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai (2017), further building his presence in Nollywood. In 2018, he starred in Up North as Bassey Otuekong, a rebellious young man sent to Northern Nigeria for his NYSC, showing his ability to take on more diverse roles. He also appeared in Sugar Rush (2019), where he played the character Anikulapo in the popular action-comedy film.
Banky W as a Politician

In maintaining the ladder, he took from being a musician to an actor, Banky W still took another step from the ladder as he dived into politics; he stepped into politics with a clear goal of creating positive change in Nigeria. He has contested twice for a seat in the House of Representatives, representing the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State.
He first ran in 2019 under the Modern Democratic Party (MDP). Although he did not win, in April 2022, he moved to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), believing it had a stronger structure to help him win. He secured the party’s ticket and contested again in the 2023 general elections. After initially losing to the Labour Party candidate, he challenged the result, leading to a supplementary election in 32 polling units where voting had issues. Despite the rerun, Banky W finished as the runner-up. Even though he did not win, his campaign stood out for promoting youth involvement, accountability, and better governance.
Banky W as a Family Man

Banky W is a devoted family man. He is married to award-winning actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, after they literally brought their roles in the 2016 blockbuster movie The Wedding Party to life by tying the knots both on-screen and in real life. They got married in 2017 and share a beautiful family with two sons. Their first son, Hazaiah (Zaiah), was born in 2021, and their second son was born in late 2024.
